Matlaba’s main goal before hanging up his boots
Veteran defender Thabo Matlaba has revealed the main goal he wants to achieve with Royal AM before hanging up his boots.
Matlaba is in the latter stages of his playing career as he’s in his late 30s.
The 36-year-old has a lot of experience and has played for many clubs such as the now-defunct Free State Stars, Orlando Pirates, Black Leopards and Moroka Swallows.
The KZN side is yet to win any silverware since their participation in the DStv Premiership in the 2021/22 season.
Matlaba says he wants to win at least one trophy with Thwihli Thwahla. The talented defender is targeting the Nedbank Cup which is the only remaining cup this season.
THABO MATLABA’S MAIN GOAL BEFORE RETIRING
“To be honest, when I left Orlando Pirates, I was not winning cups. I won a cup in 2014, the Nedbank Cup, but from there till I left Pirates I’ve never won anything,” Matlaba told FARPost.
“So my wish is to have one cup at least, the only remaining cup now is Nedbank. I wish I can have that, win one cup.
“We can’t be a team that is not winning anything for three seasons, we must have ambitions and goals. If we win one cup, we’ll be good and the team will get some confidence.”
Despite, Matlaba’s wishes of winning a trophy with the club, it will be very difficult as they are facing a transfer ban that was imposed by FIFA for the saga involving former Kaizer Chiefs striker Samir Nurkovic.
The ban has led to the club’s struggles this season. After 15 matches played, Royal AM find themselves in the relegation zone, laying in the 14th place with 18 points. They have registered five victories, three draws and suffered seven defeats in the process.
