Grant Kekana on facing Peter Shalulile at AFCON
Bafana Bafana defender Grant Kekana has shared his thoughts on facing his Mamelodi Sundowns teammate Peter Shalulile at the upcoming Afcon tournament. Kekana and Shalulile could face off in the second group E match on Sunday, 21 January if they both play. Both Bafana and the Brave Warriors are in Group E alongside Mali and Tunisia.
The two teammates as well as other Sundowns players in the Bafana team have enjoyed great success together in the South African domestic scene in recent times.
But Kekana is unfazed about facing the most dangerous striker in the DStv Premiership saying their focus is not on an individual.
BAFANA BAFANA NOT TOO FOCUSED ON PETER SHALULILE
“It’s going to be another tough one. I don’t think there will be easy games. Shalulile has obviously been a prolific striker for us,” he said.
“We go up against them at training so it’s going to be another tough encounter. But you don’t focus on one individual, you want to focus on the whole team. Do our homework and make sure that we try and nullify them as much as possible.”
GRANT KEKANA EMBRACING COMPETITION AT CENTRE BACK POSITION AT AFCON
The 31-year-old has also opened up on the competition at centre-back with the likes of Siyanda Xulu, Mothobi Mvala and Nkosinathi Sibisi.
“Obviously we are all fighting for one thing. We are fighting for our country and we are all trying to better each other,” he said.
“I think the competition is healthy and we just push one another. We know that in the centre-back position, there will be two that are chosen but the process of it needs all of us to be together.
“All of us need to work together because, at the end of the day, it’s not about self-glorification. It’s about the country and putting the country first and whoever is being selected is the one that will be doing the job but he will be well prepared.”
