Bonginkosi Makume to leave Upington to reunite with ex-club?
Defender Bonginkosi Makume has requested to leave Upington City FC, and he’s likely to reunite with his ex-club.
Makume joined second-tier league newcomers Upington in October 2023 on a free transfer after parting ways with Maritzburg United.
The Team of Choice handed Makume his clearance at the start of the 2023/24 season after they were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season.
It is understood that Makume asked the club to release him from the contract he had with them. This is after they couldn’t meet his financial demands after the relegation.
The 28-year-old centre-back has featured in nine appearances in the Motsepe Foundation and scored two goals.
BONGINKOSI MAKUME REQUEST TO LEAVE UPINGTON CITY
FARPost understands that Makume has asked to leave the Northern Cape-based side to be close to his wife in Limpopo. However, Makume is believed to be leaving Upington to reunite with his former club Baroka FC.
Makume spent four seasons at Baroka, where he made 83 appearances and scored three goals while making two assists. He left Bakgakga at the end of the 2021/22 campaign to join Maritzburg.
“I can tell you that Bonginkosi Makume requested to leave Upington City to be close to his wife,” a source said.
“This is a big surprise given the fact that Makume joined the team just a few months ago, and he’s loved in the team because of his experience. So because this is a genuine request from the player, he will be granted his wish of leaving Upington.”
Meanwhile, Upington has had an impressive start to their maiden season in the second tier after gaining promotion from the ABC Motsepe League.
‘Bafana Ba Gucci’, as they are affectionately known, won seven matches in the league, drawing six while losing four times. They are sitting fourth of the log with 27 points after 17 games played.
