Stan Matthews gives insight into Ime Okon’s assessment at Midtjylland

SuperSport United CEO Stanley Matthews has provided more details on the assessment of the club’s defender Ime Okon at FC Midtjylland.

The 19-year-old has quickly established himself as a reliable presence at the heart of SuperSport United’s defence having been promoted at the start of the season.

He has already made 22 appearances across all competitions in the first six months of the 2023/24 campaign. The teenage defender was included in the Bafana Bafana’s preliminary squad during the September and October international windows.

Okon recently jetted off to Denmark with an opportunity to train at Midtjylland bestowed upon him.

Matthews confirmed that the Danish Superliga giants are interested in bringing the young defender on board. However, he stated SuperSport weren’t looking to move him now.

While he says the club doesn’t want to block the move, they are hoping Okon would switch to Europe with “big money” after some time.

STAN MATTHEWS: DETAILS ON IME OKON’S ASSESSMENT AT FC MIDTJYLLAND

“He has been doing very well there, he’s still very young so there’s no pressure on him. And we’re not looking to move him [now],” said Matthews in an exclusive interview with FARPost.

“But we did want to give him an opportunity and it’s a big club like Midtjylland. You know they play [UEFA] Champions League and Europa League.

“So, when they showed interest in him, we certainly didn’t want to block that opportunity for him to go and train and play a little bit. And he’ll grow all the time and he will be a big money move certainly in the next two years for sure.

“He will progress rapidly if he keeps his head like it’s been from the start of his career. If he keeps his discipline and listening, then for sure he is going to play in Europe.”

“It’s not just an assessment, they are interested in him but we wanted him to train at that level. And we will assess what they think of him when he gets back.”
