Why Ofori is in Ghana’s AFCON squad despite not playing for Pirates

With concerns hovering over Richard Ofori’s lack of playing time at Orlando Pirates, Ghana coach Chris Houghton has clarified why the goalkeeper remains an indispensable part of the Black Stars setup.

Ofori is in line for selection when Ghana start their 2023 AFCON group stages campaign with a clash against Cape Verde. The group B clash takes place at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan at 10PM on Sunday.

While Ofori has the trust of his Black Stars boss, his inclusion sparks questions about form, competition and the future of Ghana’s goalkeeping position.

The 30-year-old has been relegated to third-choice goalkeeper at Pirates behind Sipho Chaine and Melusi Buthelezi. His three appearances this season were all in the CAF Champions League.

Addressing the media in Abidjan, Hughton threw the door open for a three-way battle for the starting goalkeeper position, praising the individual qualities of Richard Ofori, Lawrence Ati Zigi and Joseph Wollacott.

Hughton acknowledged the unique challenges of selecting a national team goalkeeper: “The goalkeeping situation is always a different and difficult one. Sometimes, you have a regular club starter. Sometimes you have someone not playing regularly who shines for the national team.”

The Brit believes despite his struggles in the ongoing DStv Premiership season, Ofori’s pedigree is undeniable. The seasoned shot-stopper, with 29 international appearances, has been a starter in Black Stars’ last three preparatory matches.

Hughton clearly values Ofori’s leadership and big-game experience, factors that could prove invaluable in the pressure cooker of AFCON.

“Richard Ofori has never let the nation down with regards to availability and the job he has done,” added Hughton.

“He’s a big personality, someone I would like to think – because I can only speak for a short period of time – Dede [Ayew] can speak for a longer period of time.

“I’d like to think that Richard Ofori is somebody that has never let the nation down with regards to availability and the job he has done.”

Hughton recognises the potential benefits of healthy competition in his squad. “What I’d like to think is that we’ve got three goalkeepers in the squad that all could do a very good job for us. They all have different qualities.”

Ghana’s quest for AFCON glory after a 42-year drought will require stability and confidence in between the sticks.

Hughton’s open approach promises a thrilling battle for the number one jersey, with each goalkeeper having the chance to prove their worth and contribute to the Black Stars’ quest for continental success.
