Keletso Makgalwa: Why Motsepe Foundation is tougher than DStv Premiership
Upington City FC attacker Keletso Makgalwa has explained why the Motsepe Foundation Championship is tougher than the DStv Premiership.
Makgalwa has been dishing out great performances in the Motsepe Foundation after joining Upington at the start of the 2023/24 campaign.
The former South Africa junior international joined City on a free transfer after parting ways with Mamelodi Sundowns at the start of the season.
Makgalwa scored five goals and contributed three assists in his 10 appearances with the Northern Cape-based outfit.
The dazzling form by Makgalwa attracted interest from two Premiership sides Sekhukhune United and Richards Bay FC.
MAKGALWA MAKES ASSESSMENT OF DSTV PREMIERSHIP AND MOTSEPE FOUNDATION CHAMPIONSHIP
Having participated in both the second tie and the top flight of South Africa, the utility attacker has given an assessment of both leagues.
“I think there’s a big difference between the Motsepe Foundation Championship and DStv Premiership,” Makgalwa told FARPost.
“In the Motsepe Foundation, the game is more about physicality, and man-marking. You are hardly afforded a space with the ball.
“In the DStv Premiership, you have more space with the ball because the defenders mark the spaces. The football is more free-flowing.
“So I can say that the second division is more tougher than the top league. That’s how I see the leagues.”
Meanwhile, Upington has had an impressive start to their maiden season in NFD after gaining promotion from the ABC Motsepe League.
City won seven matches in the league drawing six while losing four times in 17 matches played. They are sitting fourth on the league table with 27 points and three points away from log leaders Orbit College.
