Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena picks his favourites for AFCON title
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has offered his insights on who he believes will lift the coveted AFCON trophy in Ivory Coast.
The 34th edition of the continental showpiece kicked off on Saturday, 13 January, in Ivory Coast, and the final will be played on Sunday, 11 February.
24 strong teams are battling for the gold with national pride and bragging rights at stake. The hosts had a dream start, defeating Guinea-Bissau 2-0. Seko Fofana and Jean-Philippe Krasso were on the scoresheet.
The reigning DStv Premiership Coach of the Season, Mokwena, has tipped Nigeria, Morocco, Egypt, Senegal and Ghana to be strong contenders for the African crown.

“Nigeria will always be favourites because they have several top players, and they are never pushovers when it comes to the tournament,” said Mokwena.
“Morocco is another team I believe will do well because they have a great coach, a great squad and we saw their exploits at the last World Cup. Egypt can also be considered a big threat in the competition as they have the pedigree and know-how to win the title.
“I also tip Ghana and Senegal to be strong contenders. I think Ivory Coast will also make it to the last eight.”
The Soweto-born mentor also revealed that he has a soft spot for Bafana Bafana and Namibia because they have Sundowns players. The two teams were placed in Group E alongside Mali and Tunisia.
“It’s a tough group. My heart, as a South African, will always be with Bafana Bafana because we have several players on the team. However, with Peter Shalulile representing Namibia, I hope that both teams make it to the final.
“It’s normal for coaches to have emotional connections with their players. It’s my wish and dream to see that happen. Of course, I want to see my players excel on the international stage. So my support will be for both teams,” he added.
