How Bafana Bafana could line-up for AFCON opener against Mali
The stage is set for Bafana Bafana’s opening game in the 2023 AFCON as they prepare to face Mali on Tuesday, January 16th. With anticipation brimming, the spotlight falls on coach Hugo Broos and his tactical decisions for this game.
The 10pm clash promises to be thrilling, with both teams eager to start their campaigns on a strong note. And with that said, FARPost looks at how Broos could line-up his men for this Group E crucial battle.
Bafana coach Hugo Broos has a difficult decision when selecting his starting XI. With a talented pool of players at his disposal, he needs to choose the right combination to overcome a formidable Malian side.
Here’s how he could set up his team at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium in Korhogo, Ivory Coast.
GOALKEEPER
The undisputed number one, Ronwen Williams, must retain his place between the sticks. Williams, who missed the final friendly match against Lesotho, is back training and available for selection. His experience and leadership will be crucial in guiding the defence through the pressure of the CAF AFCON opener.
DEFENCE
Broos prefers a solid back four, and Mothobi Mvala and Siyanda Xulu are likely to form the central defensive partnership. Mvala has recovered from an injury that kept him out of training for days last week. Khuliso Mudau and Aubrey Modiba could be deployed on the flanks as full-backs, offering attacking and defensive contributions.
MIDFIELD
The midfield battle will be crucial in dictating the flow of the game. Teboho Mokoena could partner with Sphephelo Sithole in a defensive midfield role. Mokoena, known for his box-to-box abilities, could be tasked with connecting the midfield to the attack. In front of them, Broos could deploy Themba Zwane as his 10.
FORWARDS
Percy Tau remains Bafana Bafana’s talisman, and his creativity and scoring threat will be vital against Mali. Orlando Pirates’ Evidence Makgopa could slot in at centre forward as Thapelo Maseko takes the left flank. Mihlali Mayambela could also be an option on the wing, but Maseko looks likely to get the nod.
Predicted lineup [4-3-3]:
• Goalkeeper: Ronwen Williams
• Defenders: Mothobi Mvala, Siyanda Xulu, Khuliso Mudau, Aubrey Modiba
• Midfielders: Sphephelo Sithole, Teboho Mokoena, Themba Zwane
• Forwards: Percy Tau, Evidence Makgopa, Thapelo Maseko
