Update on Matias Esquivel’s arrival at Mamelodi Sundowns

There is an update on highly-rated Argentinian midfielder Matias Esquivel regarding his arrival in South Africa to complete his multimillion rand transfer to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Sundowns recently sealed a deal with Esquivel’s Argentinian team, Club Atlético Lanús, for the 24-year-old attacker.

Esquivel’s stellar season in his native country set off a scramble for his signature, with clubs in South America and Europe vying for the talented playmaker.

However, it is the reigning DStv Premiership champions Sundowns who secured the services of the left-footed playmaker on a four-year contract. Esquivel has the ability to play across midfield and attack.

And now there is the latest development on the talented ace, who has scored seven goals and registered 12 assists for Lanus in 95 games.

FARPost can reveal that the highly-rated midfielder arrived in South Africa on Sunday morning. He is set to complete his move to the 2016 CAF Champions League winners – Sundowns.

The Argentinian was picked up at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and taken to a hotel in Midrand.

He is expected to do his photoshoot on Sunday afternoon before the club unveils him officially.
The deal that takes Esquivel to Sundowns is reportedly worth in the region of R46 million.

Sundowns will now have to make space for a foreign national as they have their quota filled. Esquivel’s countryman, Junior Mendieta, Marcello Allende, Bout, Lucas Ribeiro and Abubeker Nasir, are all registered as foreigners.

The reigning South African champions are eyeing the CAF Champions League this season, hence their reinforcements. They have already won the African Football League and are on course to win a seventh successive league title.

After 13 games in the DStv Premiership, Masandawana have won 11 and drew twice. Second-placed Cape Town City, who have played 16 games, are six points behind them.
