Nigeria beat Guinea-Bissau to book Last 16 spot

Nigeria have booked a spot in the AFCON Last 16 after defeating Guinea-Bissau 1-0 in their last group stage match at Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny Stadium on Monday night. 

Below are some of the talking points from this AFCON Group A mouthwatering showdown. 

GAME NUMBER 100 FOR VICTOR OSIMHEN

The Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen made his 100th appearance for his nation. 

The talented forward has been prolific for Nigeria, helping them to qualify for this tournament and continuing to score important goals at the ongoing CAF AFCON competition.

Osimhen did what was expected of him, having a bigger impact in this tie, showing that experience cannot be bought.

He will also be expected to help his side secure the quarter-finals when they go into the knockout stage.

OPA SANGANTE CONCEDE OWN GOAL

Guinea-Bissau’s Opa Sangante was so unlucky to score in his own net in the 36th minute.

Sangante tried to clear a ball from his own 18 yards, but the ball went the wrong way [into his own net].

INTO LAST 16 

As a result, Nigeria managed to cruise their way into the knockout phase of the tournament after defeating Guinea-Bissau. Nigeria finished second in Group A with seven points. 

Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea also booked their spot in the last 16 after defeating the hosts Ivory Coast by a 4-0 scoreline in Group A to finish top of the group also on seven points. 

FEMALE REFEREE IN CHARGE OF GUINEA-BISSAU AND NIGERIA

Moroccan referee Bouchra Karboubi was assigned to officiate the Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria clash. 

It was good for football fanatics to witness the centre referee being a woman in a game of such magnitude. This goes down to show that football is for everyone.
