‘It’s not a good sign’: Broos on Khuliso Mudau’s injury
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos sounded cautious regarding defender Khuliso Mudau’s injury ahead of next week’s Round of 16 clash.
Mudau, a key figure in Broos’ plans, was substituted at halftime during the goalless draw against Tunisia on Wednesday evening at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium in Korhogo, raising concerns about his ankle.
He was seen limping to the team bus after the game and appeared to be in pain. The 28-year-old has been one of South Africa’s most consistent performers recently and would be a miss for Broos.
The Mamelodi Sundowns defender started all three group matches at the ongoing AFCON 2023. Wednesday’s goalless draw saw Bafana finish second in Group E to book a spot in Tuesday’s [30 January 2024] Last 16 slot. Bafana will now face Morocco, who topped Group F after beating Zambia 1-0 in San Pedro on Wednesday night.
WHAT HUGO BROOS SAID ABOUT KHULISO MUDAU
The Belgian mentor acknowledged the worrying development. “I don’t know, we have to wait till tomorrow [Thursday]. The fact that Khuliso was to go out is not a good sign,” Broos said.
Further details on the nature and severity of the injury remain unclear. “It’s an ankle. We [the medical team] will see him tomorrow and make a good analysis of his injury and then maybe we can decide if he should be ready for next week. “
Mudau’s potential absence would be a significant blow to Bafana, who face a crucial match early next week. Despite the uncertainty, Broos maintained a sliver of optimism. “Let’s hope [for the best],” he concluded, reflecting the anxious anticipation within the team.
The official assessment of Mudau’s injury is expected on Thursday, leaving Bafana fans and coach Broos in limbo until then. If Mudau is ruled out, Broos could turn to Thapelo Morena at right-back or Nyiko Mobbie, who came on for him.
