Matias Esquivel: All you need to know about Sundowns’ new man

Reigning DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Thursday announced the signing of Matias Esquivel. Below is all the information you need to know about Sundowns’ latest addition.

The Argentinian midfielder joins the club from Club Atletico Lanus which plays in the Argentine Primera Division.

On Sunday, this publication revealed that the highly-rated midfielder landed at OR Tambo International Airport.

The 24-year-old Esquivel is the club’s second signing in the January transfer window. Masandawana have already acquired the services of right-back Zuko Mdunyelwa from another PSL side Chippa United.

To add, the new talent becomes the six South American player in the Tshwane giants squad. Sundowns have Erwin Saavedra [Bolivia], Marcelo Allende [Chile], Junior Mendieta [Argentina], Gaston Sirino [Uruguay] and Lucas Ribeiro [Brazil].

This is the first time Esquivel is playing outside of his home country. He has previously played for Argentine Primera Division sides Club Atletico Talleres before going out on loan to Club Atletico Lanus.

His main position is playing in the central midfield, he will face stiff competition from other players like Teboho Mokoena, Bathusi Aubaas, Sipho Mbule and Bongani Zungu.

However, he’s versatile as he can play as an attacking midfielder and as a right winger depending on how the coach sets up his team.

In his career club stats in Argentina in all competitions, the midfielder has made 126 appearances. He has 29 goal contributions. The new Sundowns midfielder has found the back of the net 13 times and provided 16 assists in the process.

Esquivel’s first competitive match for the Brazilians may be on Wednesday, 14 February when the league resumes after the 2023 AFCON break. They will be on the road to face Golden Arrows at Mpumalanga Stadium.
