Sundowns’ new signing Matías Esquivel’s contract details revealed

The reigning DStv Premiership champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, have put an end to the guessing game surrounding the contract details of new signing Matías Esquivel.

Sundowns on Thursday finally announced the arrival of midfielder Matías Esquivel from Argentine side Club Atlético Lanús.

“My name is Matías Esquivel; I’m proud to be yellow,” said the Argentine attacker in a short video posted on Sundowns’ official X [Twitter] account.

As reported by FARPost, Esquivel landed in SA at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Sunday. He did his photoshoot later that day.

The 24-year-old’s arrival at Chloorkop hasn’t just brought new midfield muscle, it’s come with a hefty price tag too. Indications are that the Argentine left-footed playmaker was acquired by Sundowns for R46 million.

Sundowns, with their insatiable appetite for silverware, more especially the CAF Champions League, will expect Esquivel to hit the ground running. He’ll need to adapt quickly to the SA football scene and live up to the lofty billing that his R46 million price tag implies.

In addition to the reported figures, Sundowns confirmed that Esquivel has put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half year deal. He will be at the club until 2027.

“Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the signing of Matías Esquivel from Argentine outfit Club Atlético Lanús on a four-and-a-half year deal,” reads the club statement.

Lanús will hold onto a piece of the puzzle as the club will retain a 10% sell-on clause.

“The midfielder joins Masandawana as the second arrival of the mid-season window, following defender Zuko Mdunyelwa, who joined in December 2023.

“Esquivel has joined up with his new teammates at Chloorkop. Bafana Ba Style returned from their break to gear up for the second half of the season. Welcome to the home of the Champions Matías.”

In Lanus colours, he netted seven goals and provided 12 assists in 95 matches.

“To Chino, one of the many talents of the garnet quarry, we wish him the greatest of luck. And success in your next challenge,” said Lanus as they bid farewell to Esquivel.
