Tashreeq Matthews eyes PSL return, Sundowns in pole position

Former Borussia Dortmund prospect Tashreeq Matthews could be set for a sensational return to South Africa, with reigning DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns leading the chase for his signature.

The 23-year-old winger, currently plying his trade for Swedish outfit IK Sirius, impressed onlookers with his blistering form last season, netting 11 goals and laying on 10 assists in 33 appearances.

But despite attracting interest from clubs in Europe, including Scottish giants Rangers, regulatory hurdles stalled any immediate moves.

Now, a source close to the deal has revealed that Matthews has undergone a medical in Copenhagen, with both the player and Sundowns eager to conclude matters before the PSL’s transfer deadline slams shut later today – Friday, 26 January.

“Tassie had a medical in Copenhagen, so yes, they are trying to push it through before midnight,” the source told FARPost.

For Sundowns, the potential acquisition of Matthews represents a strategic move to bolster their attacking ranks with top-tier talent who comes in with overseas experience. However, time is of the essence, and the Brazilians must act swiftly to finalise the deal with IK Sirius before the transfer window closes.

While his two-year spell at Varberg BoIS in Sweden proved challenging, Matthews’ recent resurgence with Sirius has rekindled the flame of European interest, with clubs in Russia and Hungary also expressing keenness.

But it appears the lure of returning home and joining forces with the PSL’s dominant force has swayed Matthews towards a move to Chloorkop.

With the clock ticking down, the coming hours will determine whether Matthews makes his highly anticipated homecoming a reality, adding his considerable firepower to Sundowns’ already formidable arsenal.

The inaugural African Football League [AFL] champions have already strengthened their star-studded squad in January with the signing of Matías Esquivel from Argentine outfit Club Atlético Lanús.

Sundowns also welcomed defender Zuko Mdunyelwa, who joined the club in December 2023 from Chuppa United.
