Percy Tau sets record straight on Al Ahly future

Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau has set the record straight about his future with Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

Reports had been swirling that the South African international would be out of contract in six months, prompting speculation about a potential exit.

The 29-year-old attacker has continued to etch his name in the record books of Egyptian giants Ahly. In December, he added another glittering piece of silverware to his already impressive collection.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns prodigy played a part in Ahly’s victory in the Egyptian Super Cup final as they toiled to beat Modern Future 4-2 after extra time. That feat solidified his status as one of South Africa’s most decorated footballers.

It took his North Africa collection to a staggering seven trophies since joining Al Ahly in 2020, including the coveted CAF Champions League.

Tau quashed speculation about his future at Al Ahly, confirming he has a valid contract with the Egyptian giants until June 2025.

Speaking to FARPost while on national team duty at the ongoing AFCON2023 in Ivory Coast, Tau set the record straight.

“I still have a contract [with Al Ahly] that I still have to respect. The focus is on the AFCON and trying to do something special here. And then take it one game at a time and try and see that we can have a great AFCON that we can always remember,” Tau told FARPost.

His comments come after a strong performance in Bafana Bafana’s 4-0 victory against Namibia, in which Tau converted a penalty and helped secure their qualification for the Round of 16.

He has been a key figure for Al Ahly since joining in 2021, contributing 24 goals and 13 assists in 95 appearances across all competitions.

Tau’s focus is on helping Bafana navigate the knockout stages of AFCON. South Africa take on Morocco in a Last 16 match in San Pedro and their hopes rest on the shoulders of Tau.
