Nigeria beat Cameroon to book place in the quarter-finals

The Super Eagles of Nigeria beat Cameroon 2-0 in the AFCON Last 16 clash on Saturday to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman scored in each half to secure the victory for the Nigerians.

The three-time CAF AFCON champions will now face Angola who won their last 16 clash against Namibia.

NIGERIA ON TRACK FOR THEIR FOURTH AFCON TITLE AS THEY PROGRESS TO THE QUARTER-FINALS

One of the talking points of the match was the decision by “The Indomitable Lions” to drop Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana for the second match in a row. Coach Rigobert Song denied before the match that there was any new rift between him and the 27-year-old.

Nigeria thought they had found a lead via Ajayi Adesewo as early as the ninth minute. But his shot inside the 18-area box was adjudged to be offside. Ademola Lookman finally found a lead for Nigeria after a cross from Victor Osimhen 10 minutes before the half-time break.

The Super Eagles suffered a huge setback after Chippa United keeper Stanley Nwabali was taken off in the 78th minute through an injury. He was replaced by Omonoia FC keeper Francis Uzoho.

ANGOLA ALSO PROGRESS TO THE LAST EIGHT IN IVORY COAST

Earlier on, Angola thrashed COSAFA nation Namibia 3-0 in Bouake to advance to the quarter-finals round.

Gelson Dala scored a first-half brace. Mabilulu added one after the break to give the “Palncas Negras” their eighth win over the Brace Warriors in 14 matches. Six of their other meetings ended in draws.

Dala’s brace took his tournament tally to four goals. He is now one goal behind Equatorial Guinea’s Emilio Nsue in the race for the Golden Boot.
