The DStv Premiership January transfer window slammed shut on Friday, leaving a whirlwind of deals and fresh faces in its wake. Who struck gold, and who missed the mark?

Teams in the PSL were bolstering their squads ahead of the second half of the season. The league will resume in mid-February after the conclusion of the 2023 AFCON finals in Ivory Coast.

FARPost looks at the top January transfers that made headlines.

Sundowns bolstered their midfield by acquiring the services of Argentinian midfielder Matías Esquivel. The 24-year-old didn’t come cheap; he cost the Tshwane giants a staggering R46 million.

The South American talent will compete with the likes of Teboho Mokoena, Bongani Zungu, Sipho Mbule and Bathusi Aubaas for a place in the starting line-up.

Another good signing for Sundowns signing was the signing of midfielder Tashreeq Matthews. The talented 23-year-old returned to SA after he parted ways with Swedish top-tier side IK Sirius.

The versatile attacker played for Ajax Cape Town [now called Cape Town Spurs] in 2018 before moving to Europe.

Chippa United re-united with striker Eva Nga after the world governing body, FIFA, lifted their transfer ban on Friday morning. Eva Nga will be aiming to find his scoring boots after he struggled for form and minutes at Orlando Pirates.

In the one-and-a-half seasons he spent at the Soweto giants, he only played 17 matches and found the back of the net once.

Meanwhile, former Orlando Pirates star Thembinkosi Lorch switched sides as he completed his move to Mamelodi Sundowns. The 30-year-old left the Bucs after eight seasons, having joined the club in the 2016/17 PSL season.

At Sundowns, he will face serious competition for a place in the starting line-up. Masandawana have other top stars like Themba Zwane, Lucas Riveiro and Marcelo Allende who play in the same position as Lorch.

Midfielder Siphesihle Maduna found a new home at struggling Cape Town Spurs after he was released by AmaZulu FC. The 24-year-old will be aiming to continue displaying great performances when the league resumes mid February after the conclusion of the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

OTHER JANUARY DEALS IN THE DSTV PREMIERSHIP

Other signings that happened in January saw AmaZulu sign Sifiso Ngobeni on loan and Augustine Mulenga from Sundowns and Chippa, respectively. Orlando Pirates brought in two new faces, Thabiso Libitso and Thalenthe Mbatha, from Chippa United and SuperSport United, respectively.

Sundowns also beefed up their defence, bringing in Zuko Mdunyelwa from Chippa United. Richards Bay FC signed Malawian striker Khuda Myaba on a short-term deal.

Kagiso Malinga signed for Golden Arrows following his Moroka Swallows exit, and Cape Town City FC snapped Namibia international Prins Tjiueza from KF Liria.
