Katsande urges Billiat to take inspiration from Bafana star

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande has urged Khama Billiat to take inspiration from a Bafana star as his struggles persist.

The retired hard-tackling midfielder feels Khama Billiat might end up hanging his boots if he fails to secure a club this year.

In fact, Willard Katsande is confident his countryman can still make a significant impact at both club and national team levels. Billiat parted ways with Kaizer Chiefs after the end of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season. He decided against renewing his contract with the Soweto giants.

Billiat recently tried his luck at SuperSport United, but the Gavin Hunt-coached side had no plans of signing him.

And at this point, Katsande believes Billiat should take inspiration from his former teammate. Katsande says Themba Zwane is the perfect example of what Billiat can be.

“I respect Billiat, and I will never question his decisions. But I fear that if he remains without a club for an extended period, it might lead him to make a decision that will shock many,” Katsande told The Herald.

“And I’m not ready to wake up to the news of his retirement. We need him back as soon as possible. He is an inspiration to youngsters, not only in Zimbabwe and South Africa but on this continent. He should also do me a favour and come out of retirement from international football because we need him.

“This is our golden opportunity to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. He should also feel challenged by what this group of Bafana Bafana players is doing with Themba Zwane.

“Everyone knows what he is capable of, and we need to use his experience to lead the Warriors [Zimbabwe].”

The 33-year-old Billiat arrived in South Africa in 2010 to join Ajax Cape Town from Zimbabwean outfit Caps United. Three years later, he moved to Mamelodi Sundowns, where he won several accolades under coach Pitso Mosimane.

He won three league titles, the CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup titles, the Telkom Knockout Cup and the Nedbank Cup titles in 2013 and 2018.
