Another PSL club grapples with unpaid salaries crisis

As financial concerns continue to plague the PSL, with several clubs grappling with delayed or unpaid salaries, another team has found itself thrust into the spotlight for similar struggles.

This latest development raises fresh questions about the financial sustainability of the league and the well-being of its players.

Moroka Swallows have been in the news recently over player’s unpaid salaries. The payment issue resulted in the players boycotting two DStv Premiership matches against Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows in December.

The Dube Birds were fined R1 million by the PSL DC, while the two games were rated as walk-overs, with Sundowns and Arrows given three points each.

Swallows have since taken disciplinary actions against players who took part in the strike, with the Soweto-based outfit reported to have dismissed 22 players.

Meanwhile, Royal AM is another team that was believed to have failed to pay the salaries of the players for December 2023. The KZN-based side came out to dispel the rumours, insisting that they are committed to fulfilling their contractual obligations to the players.

And as reported by FARPost, players and staff at Baroka FC were only paid 50% of their salaries on the 25th of December, 2023.

MILFORD FC IN DELAYED PAYMENT HAVOC

South African Players Union (SAFPU) confirmed that the Motsepe Foundation Championship side Milford FC has been wreaked by the delayed payments havoc.

Milford are in their maiden season in the NFD after purchasing the status of Uthongathi FC at the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

“At Milford FC, now there’s problems of unpaid salaries. If the players take action, they [clubs] will quickly run to the courts and say players are wrong. Instead of talking to the players to say we have financial difficulties and bear with us,” SAFPU president Thulaganyo Gaoshubelwe said.

“Players are very reasonable and understanding when you talk to them, but when they heard enough, and you keep on lying, at some point, they must take a stand.”

Milford FC lies 12th on the Motsepe Foundation log with 19 points after 17 games played. They won five games in the league and drew five while suffering eight defeats.
