Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has highlighted Teboho Mokoena’s key attributes after the midfielder’s impressive AFCON display against Morocco on Tuesday night.

South Africa advanced to the quarter-finals of this prestigious tournament following a 2-0 victory against the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists Morocco.

The mouthwatering Round of 16 showdown took place at Stade de San Pédro Stadium in Ivory Coast in front of 19078 fans.

Second-half goals from Orlando Pirates striker Evidence Makgopa and Mokoena’s spectacular free-kick were enough to earn Bafana a win against the Atlas Lions.

HUGO BROOS ON TEBOHO MOKOENA AFCON’S PERFORMANCE

The Belgian mentor saw Mokoena as a player who provided more steel and structure in the Bafana midfield.

Mokoena’s stellar displays on the night against Morocco earned him the Man of the Match accolade.

“Teboho [Mokoena] did a fantastic performance today. He is really the motive of the midfield, and it is good for the team also,” said Broos after the game.

“I think is also good for Teboho in this tournament. He became a little bit big, but not like in his last games. He is a guy who makes a big distance in a game. Looking for the ball and have great passes.

“So, he is a very good player and works a lot to help with his performances.”

WHO ARE BAFANA BAFANA’S NEXT OPPONENTS IN THE LAST 8?

Broos’ charges will face Cape Verde in the AFCON quarter-finals on Saturday, 3 February 2024.

The game will take place at Stade Charles Konan Banny de Yamoussoukro Stadium, with the kick-off scheduled for 22:00.

This is the first time in AFCON history that none of the quarter-finalists from the previous tournament [AFCON 2021] reach the quarter-finals of the next tournament [2023 AFCON].
