Williams on what made his job ‘easier’ on penalties against Cape Verde
Following his heroics on penalties against Cape Verde, Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has explained what made his job “more easier” during the shootout.
Williams was a national hero, sending South Africa to their first AFCON semi-final since 2000. He saved four penalties and conceded one with Teboho Mokoena and Mothobi Mvala scoring for Hugo Broos’ side to secure the victory.
Prior to the penalty shootout, Bafana captain Williams came to his side’s rescue to keep out Garry Rodrigues who had unleashed a quick low drive inside the box in the 56th minute.
The skipper’s magnificent showing in the match saw him collect the Man of the Match award on the day.
Williams gave credit to the Bafana analysts for making his job “more easier” during the preparation for penalties. He says they provided him with enough footage of Blue Sharks’ previous spot-kicks for him to know at least half of the opponents.

“I give credit to the analysts, they prepared me, they cut so many videos,” said Williams in the press conference after the match.
“We studied the clips, I studied them as well. Yeah, it’s not [only] me [who did the job], like I said credit to the analysts and the goalkeeper coach as well. They sent me so many clips you know, my phone is full of penalty clips.
“So, it’s a credit to the analysts for doing the work cause it’s not easy to do get footage of some of the players because they are playing all over the world.
“Yeah, big ups to the analysts for preparing the work for me to watch and study. They made my job 50% more easier cause I had an idea where most of the players were going.”
In their next match, Bafana will face Nigeria on Wednesday, 7 February at 7:00 pm at the Stade Bouake battling for a spot in the final.
