Upington City welcome ex-Cape Town Spurs attacker for assessment

A former Cape Town Spurs attacker has been welcomed by Upington City for assessment as he continues his search for a new home.

The Motsepe Foundation Championship newcomers have had an impressive run in the first round of the 2023/24 season. They sit in fourth position on the log standings and are just three points behind the log leaders Orbit College.

City have accumulated 27 points after 17 league matches and are aiming to secure a promotion to the DStv Premiership in their first campaign in the second-tier.

They have 13 matches left this season to make things happen with stiff competition from the likes of Orbit College, AmaTuks, Baroka FC, Hungry Lions and Magesi FC.

Bafana Ba GUCCI gained promotion to the Championship after they beat Mpheni Defenders of Limpopo in the ABC Motsepe National Playoffs semi-final last year.

With Upington still seemingly keen to reinforce their team, they have welcomed the former Cape Town Spurs man Ntsika Thembani. The 20-year-old can play both as an attacking midfielder and a second striker.

It is understood he will start training with the club this week ahead of the start of the second round.

The Cape Town-born has also been under the watchful eye of M Tigers coach Godfrey Sapula as the Mamelodi Sundowns feeder team was assessing him. They are still said to be following his progress.

The left-footer, Thembani has also played for Ajax Cape Town in the ABC Motsepe League. He’s looking forward to impressing the technical team led by Thulani Nkosi.

Upington will start their second-round run with an encounter with Hungry Lions who have the same number of points with them and are in position five.
