Hugo Broos addresses retirement talks amid AFCON success

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has opened up about the retirement talks amid his side’s success at the ongoing AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire.

The 71-year-old tactician is the oldest coach in the tournament and propelled South Africa to their first semi-final in 24 years. He defied the odds eliminating Morocco and Cape Verde in the knockout stages to secure the spot in the last four.

Before AFCON, Broos spoke to the media in Belgium revealing that Bafana could be his last job. He further insisted that it “didn’t concern” him what decision SAFA would take should Bafana not do well at AFCON.

But SA have fared well in the edition of the continental showpiece under his tutelage.

Speaking ahead of their semi-final against Nigeria, Broos admitted that at his age, thoughts about retiring do come. However, he said it would be difficult to stop coaching while things are going well.

HUGO BROOS SAYS WHY WOULD HE RETIRE WHEN THINGS ARE GOING WELL

“I said, ‘okay I’m 71’, it’s moments to think about stopping your career,” said Broos in the press conference ahead of their clash against Nigeria.

“But there is a lot of things going right now why should I stop? I like my job, I like football.

“So, we will see what the future brings but I think it’s totally normal that after the career of 36 years as a coach and 18 years of professional football. Little by little, you start thinking about the end of your career.”

In his quest for the second AFCON trophy, Broos will be leading Bafana when they take on Super Eagles on Wednesday, 07 February at Stade de la Paix. He hoisted the trophy with Indomitable Lions in 2017.

SA are also aiming for their second in history having lifted the trophy on home soil in 1996.
