New faces spotted at Swallows training including ex-Pirates midfielder

With Moroka Swallows rebuilding their team after dismissing more than 20 players, new faces have been spotted at their training including the former Orlando Pirates midfielder.

The Dube Birds reportedly sacked the majority of their squad after the players went on strike over the unpaid salaries. They refused to train for days, leading to the inability of the club to honour its two DStv Premiership fixtures against Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows.

Subsequently, Swallows held the disciplinary hearing and sacked 22 players and were said to have fired even more a few days after.

However, in a turn of events, Daniel Akpeyi, Tlakusani Mthethwa and Gabadinho Mhango who were reportedly among the sacked, returned to training with Swallows.

The club posted the pictures of the trio on their social media platforms last week.

As they prepare for what is going to be a tough second round of the 2023/24 season, some trialists have been spotted at their training.

WHO ARE THE NEW FACES AT THE MOROKA SWALLOWS TRAINING?

FARPost understands the Dube Birds have welcomed trialists including the former Orlando Pirates attacking midfielder Augustine Mahlonoko and Tristan Nikitaridis.

Following his exit from La Masia, Mahlonoko went on to try his luck at Casric Stars in January as he’s now eyeing a top-flight return. And Nikitaridis was under assessment at AmaZulu last month but the club decided against signing him.

Meanwhile, last week, SABC Sport reported that Swallows head coach Steve Komphela had skipped training when the club returned to work. The report added that assistant coaches Musa Nyatama and Ditheko Mototo were in charge of the sessions.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for the former Kaizer Chiefs mentor.

Swallows will begin their second round with a trip to Western Cape. They take on Cape City on Tuesday, 13 February at 7:30 pm at DHL Stadium.
