Bafana quartet tipped to cut into Europe after sterling AFCON show

Four Bafana Bafana stars at the ongoing AFCON 2023 have been tipped to cut into the European football market after their sterling show at the tourney.

Former PSL star Alois Bunjira has handpicked the quartet of Teboho Mokoena, Aubrey Modiba, Sphephelo Sithole and Khuliso Mudau as the best performers for Bafana.

The four Bafana Bafana stars featured in all of South Africa’s matches at AFCON, with Mokoena scoring two goals.

Simply put, Mokoena and Sithole formed a formidable midfield duo, while Modiba and Mudau were sterling in their full-back positions. Prior to the tournament, Mudau had been linked with a move to EPL side Burnley FC. And hopes are now high that something materialises, especially after his inspiring performance at the AFCON 2023.

In fact, the ex-Bidvest Wits forward Bunjira opines that the four proved they have what it takes to play in the top five European leagues.

Bunjira, however, believes the midfield maestro Mokoena is now ripe for the highly-rated EPL.

“Teboho Mokoena, is one hell of a good midfield player. After giving a below-par performance in the first game of the tournament, he came back with guns blazing,” said Bunjira.

“And he has been outstanding, pulling the strings in the heart of the South African midfield. I don’t see him playing in South Africa for long, after the AFCON tournament. Europe is beckoning. He can easily play in the EPL.

“I also see Aubrey Modiba, Sphephelo Sithole and Khuliso Mudau going to Europe after the AFCON. These guys are damn good players.

“Ronwen Williams has had a great tournament, but I don’t see him going to Europe at 32. He will make good of his performances by getting a bumper contract at Sundowns.

“Bafana Bafana’s performance at the current AFCON and the squad’s average age, estimated to be 26, gives hope that they are the generation to bring back glory days to South Africa in the near future”

Meanwhile, Bafana will face DR Congo on Saturday in the third-place play-off match at Stade Felix in Cote d’Ivoire at 10 pm.
