Komphela’s future up in the air: ‘I’m watching this movie unfold’
The drama continues at Moroka Swallows. After a tumultuous period marked by players’ strike and dismissals, the club’s head coach, Steve Komphela, has added another layer of uncertainty to the situation.
Komphela’s recent comments, suggesting a wait-and-see approach to his own future, offer little comfort to supporters desperate for stability and direction.
The Dube Birds have been in the news for all wrong reasons in the past few months as they battle financial constraints.
Swallows’ financial challenges saw them struggle to fulfil their salary obligations to the players, which resulted in the players boycotting the club’s last two DStv Premiership matches of 2023.
The Soweto-based outfit failed to honour the fixtures against Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows. As a result, Swallows were slapped with a hefty R1 million fine by the PSL DC for failing to pitch for the league matches.
Last month, Swallows embarked on internal disciplinary actions and reportedly dismissed 22 players for bringing the club into disrepute.
Meanwhile, Steve Komphela, who is yet to return to training at Swallows, recently voiced his frustration with the lack of communication from the club’s management.
STEVE KOMPHELA UNSURE ABOUT HIS FUTURE AT MOROKA SWALLOWS
With uncertainty hanging over the head of the former Kaizer Chiefs mentor at Swallows, he has dropped a hint about his future.
“I was not denied entry to the training venue because I didn’t even go there,” Komphela said on Radio 2000. “I’m still waiting for communication from the office because after the games were cancelled in December, we were told that training should not resume till further notice.
“The league resumes next week. Maybe there will be change, and sanity will prevail, and we find a way forward. But right now, I’m just sitting back and watching this movie unfold.
“I don’t want to talk about Swallows issues until we discuss them with the club. But I was called to Moroka Swallows to help. We were number four until we had these self-inflicted challenges. I don’t know what’s gonna happen next because a lot has happened now.
“There are players that have been expelled and disciplinary hearings that I didn’t even know about. There were trials conducted. I didn’t know about them.
“But the supporters are calling for me to come back. But when I go back, how do I enter that terrain because a lot has been dismantled? A lot of preparation seems to have been happening in my absence. How do I then take hold of the steering wheel of a car that I never built.”
