‘He’ll be a classy goalkeeper coach’: Ex-PSL goalie tips a Bafana Bafana star
Ex-PSL goalie Edmore Sibanda has tipped a Bafana Bafana star to be a classy goalkeeper coach because of what he believes are ‘rare attributes’.
Bafana Bafana finished third at the 2023 AFCON finals after beating DR Congo 6-5 on penalties in the third place play-off on Saturday night.
The match had ended 0-0 after regulation time. And it was Ronwen Williams whose heroics came out again in the penalty shootout to guide the nation to a bronze medal.
The Bafana skipper was the hero in the quarter-finals when he made four saves in the shootout to help Bafana beat Cape Verde 2-1 on penalties.
Interestingly, Williams has now surpassed Bafana’s 1996 AFCON-winning goalkeeper, Andre Arendse, who kept four clean sheets on home soil. Overall, Williams kept five clean sheets for Hugo Broos’ coached side, who were the surprise package in the tournament.
WHY THE EX-PSL GOALIE BELIEVES WILLIAMS MAKES A CLASSY GOALKEEPER COACH
And the ex-PSL goalie Edmore Sibanda believes the Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana star can be a classy goalkeeper coach.
“There are so many reasons why he is the best, but his composure stands out as the best attribute,” Sibanda told FARPost.
“To be honest, I don’t think there is any goalkeeper that has his kind of composure in the league [DStv Premiership].
“And he was always like that even before joining Sundowns. I have always admired him, and I think he will be a classy goalkeeper coach because of his rare attributes. After Itumeleng Khune, Williams is the best South Africa has in the goalkeeping department.”
Sibanda added: “He proved that he is able to produce a wide range of different saves. That is more to keeping than just technical ability.
“He is brave and an excellent communicator, focused, determined, and willing to endure the criticisms. For me, that is what best keepers must be equipped with, but also, the fitness and strength levels are important.”
