Former AmaZulu FC defender spotted training with Maritzburg United

A former AmaZulu FC defender has been spotted training with Maritzburg United after parting ways with the Durban-based club.

The Team of Choice’s first season in the second-tier hasn’t been a piece of cake as they have somewhat struggled to accumulate points like they would have wanted. They have collected 20 from 17 games played.

They’re 11th on the log standings, 10 points behind the log leaders Orbit College and four points ahead of Venda FC who are rooted at the bottom.

With the second round starting this week following the AFCON recess, Maritzburg will be looking to continue seeking their way back to the top-flight.

And it looks like they could still bolster their team if they decide to sign the former AmaZulu left-back Mfanafuthi Mkhize who has been training with them lately.

Mkhize joined Usuthu at the beginning of the current campaign from the Motsepe Foundation Championship side Uthongathi FC. But he never featured for the club until he recently left.

The 25-year-old was among AmaZulu players that weren’t training with Pablo Franco Martin’s squad. This included Mxolisi Kunene, Siphesihle Maduna and Mswati Mavuso.

They have all since left except Mavuso whose future is still uncertain.

While Kunene is still in search of a new club, Maduna signed for Cape Town Spurs in what was a shock move two weeks ago.

Mkhize is also hoping to earn a contract if he impresses the club’s head coach Simo Dladla who’s said to have worked with him at Uthongathi FC.

If he puts the pen to paper, he will have to compete with the likes of Nkanyiso Madonsela and Zukile Kewuti. The former Cape Town City man, Kewuti who’s usually a midfielder has, at times, been utilised at the back by the Pietermaritzburg-based side.

Meanwhile, Madonsela recently signed for Maritzburg as a free agent. He had been without a club since July 2023 after leaving Sekhukhune United.
