‘He doesn’t believe in surgery’: John Comitis on Mokeke’s exit at CT City
Cape Town City FC chairman John Comitis has opened up on Thato Mokeke’s surprise exit at the club, revealing that the midfielder doesn’t “believe in surgery”.
Mokeke parted ways with CT City last week as they prepare for the second round of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership.
CT City cut ties with the talented midfielder outside of the transfer window, and he’ll have to wait for the July 2024 transfer to join a new club.
The 33-year-old star spent six seasons at CT City after being signed from Chippa United in 2019. He made 171 appearances for the Citizens and scored only one goal while contributing six assists.
In his time with CT City, Thato Mokeke won the Telkom Knockout in the 2016/17 season, finished as runners-up in the MTN8, and finished third in the league in the same campaign.
JOHN COMITIS EXPLAINS REASONS BEHIND THE AXING OF MOKEKE
With details around Mokeke’s departure unknown, John Comitis has now opened up on the surprise separation between the two parties.
Comitis claimed that Mokeke was let go because he was injured, and he didn’t want to do surgery to speed up his healing process.
“Thato Mokeke hasn’t played because of injury, and he doesn’t believe in surgery,” said Comitis on Radio 2000.
“So obviously, it can take longer to heal. He’s 34 now, and we have [Luyolo] Slatsha and [Brice] Ambina in that position. We offered to pay him out and give him an opportunity to look elsewhere.”
Meanwhile, CT City has had an impressive run in the first round of the current DStv Premiership season. The Eric Tinkler-coached team has won nine games in the league, drew two, and lost five times.
They collected 29 points after 16 matches, and they are nine points away from log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. The Brazilians are sitting comfortably at the summit of the table with 38 points in 14 matches played.
