Gavin Hunt on Khama Billiat SuperSport’s failed potential move

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has made surprising remarks about Khama Billiat’s failed move to the Tshwane outfit.

The former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns star was the subject of reported interest from several clubs in the PSL following his departure from Amakhosi.

Billiat left Chiefs during the 2023/24 pre-season after he brushed aside a contract renewal opportunity.
And when murmurings of Billiat’s unhappiness in Naturena first came to light, Cape Town City FC were heavily linked with him, as well as teams in Saudi Arabia.

But what looked more promising for the former Ajax Cape Town attacker was when he tried his luck at the Matsatsatsa training turf a few weeks ago.

The 33-year-old playmaker could have probably penned a deal with the Tshwane club after undergoing a trial. Interestingly, Matsatsantsa’s captain, Onismor Bhasera, had higher hopes that his countryman could join SuperSport as a free agent.

Bhasera said that he would love to see Billiat joining Hunt’s team because of the Zimbabwean’s freak athleticism and quality. However, according to Hunt, after just a day of training with the team, surprisingly, Billiat was nowhere to be seen.

In addition, reports suggested that SuperSport could not add Billiat to their squad due to his “rustiness”. The club’s CEO, Stan Mathews, was also quoted confirming that they were not going to sign him.

WHAT GAVIN HUNT KNOWS ABOUT KHAMA BILLIAT’S ASSESSMENT AT SUPERSPORT

Now, Hunt, who coached Billiat at Chiefs four seasons ago, has revealed that the talented attacker only had one training session and never set foot again at SuperSport training premises.

“He trained here one morning, he was here just one morning, and he never came back, that’s all,” said Hunt after SuperSport’s 1-1 draw against Stellenbosch FC on Friday night in a league clash at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

“He was here for one day, and he left, and he never came back. I wasn’t there [when Khama Billiat went to training], though, so I have never seen him. I never spoke to Billiat since at Kaizer Chiefs, years ago.”

The Zimbabwean international rose to prominence in the PSL when he joined Ajax Cape Town in 2010 from his native country’s club, CAPS United.

Most notably, he starred during his five-year stint as a Mamelodi Sundowns player between 2013 and 2018. He won three Premiership titles and several cup competitions. Moreover, he lifted the CAF Champions League and the CAF Super Cup with the Brazilians under the club’s former coach, Pitso Mosimane, before he left to join Amakhosi in 2018.

WHERE WILL KHAMA BILLIAT TURN UP NEXT?

After struggling to find a team for months and having stopped training with SuperSport, Billiat looks set to return to his home country.

It is emerged that Billiat is closing in on a deal to join Harare giants Dynamos FC. As reported by FARPost, Dynamos and the former Chiefs star are negotiating as they try to reach a deal.
