‘It’s very frustrating’: Hunt on losing DDC stars to bigger clubs

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has expressed his frustrations over losing DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] stars to bigger clubs in the SA’s elite league.

Matsatsantsa is well-known for producing superstars each season, with bigger clubs coming knocking at their doorsteps.

Thapelo Maseko is one perfect example of a recent SuperSport DDC product, who went on to join Mamelodi Sundowns and also represented Bafana Bafana at the just-ended 2023 CAF AFCON tournament held in Ivory Coast.

Hunt admitted that losing rising stars to arch-rivals every season is a problem simply because you “can never build anything” as a coach.

At this point, coach Hunt seems to have already made peace with the fact that he will lose one of his rising stars, Shandre Campbell.

So far, the talented 18-year-old footballer has played 16 games across all competitions for the Tshwane giants. To put a cherry on top, the left-winger scored two goals and weighed in with four assists.

At the rate the SuperSport starlet is performing, one can say Campbell is showing signs of growing in influence as a left-winger for Hunt’s side, and bigger clubs are waiting patiently to break the bank for his signature.

GAVIN HUNT ON LOSING EMERGING DDC STARS EVERY SEASON

“Well, Campbell is going to be bought now again, isn’t it? So I have to have another one; it will be three in three years,” said Hunt when quizzed about losing DDC stars to other clubs.

“Yes, it’s a problem. We have to try and look at our conveyor belt all the time because of our situation because players are going to move all the time. It’s very frustrating as a coach because you can never build anything. So, it’s very difficult, but that’s the business we are in, and that’s what it is.

Hunt also acknowledged that Oratilwe Moloisane, who also plays a left-winger, is the next big thing that people will be talking about soon.

“But I agree with you; he’s [Oratilwe Moloisane] a big talent, and he’s the next one. There’s a few more coming; we have to promote more youngsters into the first team,” he added.
