‘It’s not the right time’: Johnson on squad rotation

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Cavin Johnson has resisted the temptation to fiddle with his squad ahead of their Nedbank Cup round of 32 tie against Milford FC.

Amakhosi will welcome the Motsepe Foundation Championship side at the FNB Stadium on Sunday, 25 February 2024. The game will start at 18:00.

Coach Johnson was asked if he would use this game to give the youngsters at the club some game time.

The youngsters in this context were about the likes of Mfundo Vilakazi, Wandile Duba, Samkele Zwane, and Mduduzi Tshabalala.

This past weekend, Vilakazi was named in the Glamour Boys’ matchday squad for their clash with Royal AM, with Johnson hinting at potential minutes: “Oh yes, Mfundo is in the matchday squad and let’s hope he can get some minutes.”

However, Vilakazi couldn’t earn his much-awaited debut for the Soweto giants, as Chiefs played out to a 0-0 draw with Thwihli Thwahla at Harry Gwala Stadium.

CAVIN JOHNSON ON SQUAD ROTATION

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s game, Johnson stated that he’s not keen on making too many changes from his usual squad.

“It’s probably not the best time, it’s also a good time to do it. Personally, I don’t like the word rotation because we will all want to see something different,” Johnson told the media.

“I think if you employ 30 people in your team, they should be ready to play at any time. And that’s not rotation but a matter of you using the right players against the correct opposition. And using the right players is based on what you think is the right player to play against the opposition you are playing against.

“That’s for me, is important for the players to understand and for us to understand, otherwise we will always have an A and B team.”

Johnson continued: “And now you’re asking me if it’s the right time? No, I don’t think it’s the right time. Whoever is on the squad on the day, I think is capable of playing on any day.”
