Chiefs knocked out of Nedbank Cup

Kaizer Chiefs have been knocked out of the Nedbank Cup following a 5-4 penalty shootout defeat by Milford FC in the last 32 at FNB Stadium on Saturday night.

Amakhosi made five changes to the team that played to a 0-0 draw against Royal AM in the DStv Premiership a few days ago. Happy Mashiane, who started his first match of the season, was one of the inclusions in the team.

Youngster Mfundo Vilakazi also made his debut for Chiefs coming on as a second half substitute. The 18-year-old nearly gave Chiefs the lead a few minutes later. But his snapshot was easily saved by Milford goalkeeper Siphamandla Hleza. Regular captain Yusuf Maart was also dropped for the match with Edmilson Dove captaining the side.

Chiefs continued to create more chances in the second half. But Hleza was on top of his game and created world-class saves. Substitute Ranga Chivaviro thought he had given the hosts the much-deserved lead with five minutes remaining. But his long-range shot from outside the box hit the crossbar.

Milford managed to hold on to the pressure from Chiefs and forced the match into extra time. Chiefs were awarded a penalty 12 minutes into the first half of extra-time after Unathi Somabhele handled the ball in the 18 area. But Hlazi was the hero for Milford as he saved the spot kick from Ranga Chivaviro.

Milford were reduced to 10-men when defender Vusumuzi Mthabela received his second yellow after a foul on Mmodi. But Chiefs still failed to find the back of the net and it needed a penalty shootout to decide the match.
