Johnson reacts to Chiefs’ shocking Nedbank Cup exit
Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson has reacted to the club’s shocking elimination in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 against Milford FC.
Amakhosi were knocked out in the first round of the Nedbank Cup by Motsepe Foundation Championship side Milford on Sunday night at FNB Stadium.
Chiefs lost 5-4 on penalties against the KZN-based outfit after the match finished goalless in extra-time. The Soweto giants dominated the match but squandered countless goal-scoring opportunities.
In the first half, attacker Ashley Du Preez came close to giving Chiefs the lead after firing his shot against the woodwork. Late in the game, Ranga Chivaviro also hit the upright.
As they continued a search for an opening goal, Chiefs were awarded a penalty in extra time, but Chivaviro couldn’t convert from the penalty spot.
JOHNSON BEMOANS MISSED SCORING CHANCES AGAINST MILFORD FC
With the Glamour Boys missing out on yet another opportunity to win silverware, Johnson expressed his disappointment.
“Not a good day at the office for Chiefs. I thought we had probably 89% of [ball] position in the game. We played against a team that sat back the whole game,” Johnson said.
“The whole game, we had four clear chances, and we also went on to miss the penalty. So when you think about the time, you think about the time we should have scored in the first 15 minutes. We had two clear chances, and we didn’t put it away.
“We had a good chance in the extra-time [through a penalty], but we didn’t score that; there are so many moments in the game that we didn’t score the goals, we didn’t dominate the opponents correctly, and we lose the game on penalties.
“But as they always say, we tried to play until the fat lady sings and today she sang for the oppositions, unlucky for Kaizer Chiefs, it’s not a good pill to swallow now. We wanted to maintain our record in this particular cup, but it was not to be.
“We gonna have to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves and play for the league, play as hard as we can because if I can invite you in the change room now, you gonna see a lot of sad boys.”
Chiefs will shift their focus in the league action when they face Moroka Swallows on Saturday, 02 March 2024, at FNB Stadium.
