Hlompho Kekana reveals coaching ambitions

Former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana has shared his reasons on why he is pursuing coaching qualifications.

Kekana is part of the coaches who are currently doing the CAF C coaching license hosted by SAFA at the University of Limpopo, outside Polokwane.

The 38-year-old last played professionally at Sundowns during the 2020/2021 season. He explained to FARPost why he felt the need to enhance his coaching badges.

“I guess it’s the name of the game where pressure makes the game interesting. I think for us is to make sure that we concentrate on getting these badges because they will help us,” he said.

“So it is important for me to concentrate on this process of getting the qualifications. When the time is right where I will have to use the knowledge that I have learned over the years. It will work to my advantage, and the people that I will be leading at the time will benefit.

WHY HLOMPHO KEKANA IS MOTIVATED TO PURSUE HIS COACHING BADGES

“It’s something that one should do, and I believe with the knowledge that we accumulated in football, it’s just to back it up with qualifications, and I think we are the right people to talk about the game because we have been in the game for too long.

“So it’s just a matter of equipping myself with these qualifications. I think they will help in the long run. So that when you speak about the game, you speak about something that you know in writing and knowledge of the game,” added Kekana.

The coaching course is attended by, amongst others, charismatic coach Kgoloko Thobejane. Kekana has since shared how Kekana has been sharing his knowledge of the game with the rest of the coaches in attendance.

“The one that stands out for me is to share a class with Kgoloko Thobejane and the rest of the guys that I played with since I was young. Tlou Molokwane is here, Parks Kobola is here, I see Thabiso [Semenya].

“So there are a lot of people that I always love to see them having this qualification because I always believe people who played the game need to help us as a country to take our football in the right direction,” he said.

“It’s very encouraging for me and I learnt a lot in this whole week to spend time with Kgoloko. He has a high knowledge of the game. I was so impressed because of the knowledge he has of the game.

“When he explains the game, you don’t need to look anywhere else because he understands the game. That for me refreshes my mind to know that there are people who invested their minds to know that they are in this game that we love. It’s so refreshing to learn.”
