How much Sundowns bagged for reaching CAF CL quarter-finals

Mamelodi Sundowns recently secured a spot in the CAF Champions League last eight, here is how much they are guaranteed to take home.

On Sunday, Masandawana downed FC Nouadhibou 2-0 on the road to take their points tally to 10. They sit on top of the table with TP Mazembe, who have also qualified, occupying the second position with the same number of points.

The Brazilians have won three out of five games, losing one to Mazembe and drawing with Pyramids

They are still going to face the DR Congo giants, TP Mazembe in the last match of the group stage before they get into the knockout stages. The match will be on 2 March at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

The Tshwane giants are guaranteed to take home USD 900 000 [R17 million] along with the other quarter-finalists.

In the last year’s competition, they walked away with USD1,2 million  [R23 million] after they were eliminated by Wydad Casablanca in the semi-finals. The runners-up get USD 2 million [R38,3 million] while the winners earn a whopping USD 4 million [R76,6 million].

Six clubs have sealed spots in the last eight with one match-day to go in the group stages. These are Sundowns, TP Mazembe, ASEC Mimosas, Petro de Luanda, Al Ahly SC and Young Africans.

Bafana Ba Style have struggled to get their second star for years after they won their first Champions League in 2016 under the guidance of Pitso Mosimane.

In 2017, they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Wydad Casablanca who went on to lift the title while in 2018, they couldn’t come out of the group, finishing third below Horoya SC and Wydad Casablanca.

In 2019, they were eliminated by Wydad in the semi-finals while in 2020 and 2021, they were knocked out by the Egyptian giants, Al Ahly in the quarter-finals.

They were then shocked by Petro de Luanda in 2022 with the Angolan side beating them 3-2 in the last eight. And last season, they were humbled by Wydad knocking them out in the semi-final.
