How PSL teams could keep up and try to close Sundowns’ gap
A Mamelodi Sundowns legend has hinted at what other PSL teams could do to keep up and close Masandawana’s gap in the SA top flight.
The Brazilians are currently cruising nicely at the summit of the DStv Premiership log standings with 42 points. Sundowns have conceded just four goals in the league after 16 games this season.
In fact, Bafana Ba Style have become the first-ever PSL side to go 40 consecutive league games unbeaten, extending the top-flight record they first set in September 2023.
In those 40 games, the Chloorkop-based side won 31 and drew nine in the process.
MASANDAWANA LEGEND ON WHAT PSL TEAMS CAN DO TO TRY CLOSE MAMELODI SUNDOWNS’ GAP
Masandawana legend Hlompho Kekana has weighed in on what other PSL clubs could do to try to close up the Sundowns’ gap.
The former Bafana Bafana international insists that other teams need players with intent, and capable enough of fighting for titles, and also the club’s hierarchy should be willing to shell out money to invest further in making the team strong.
Kekana says it is clear that quality and big investment ultimately bring success, and Sundowns’ success over the years has proved that.
He believes that clubs have to build a strong team, who become inspired by pressure situations, leading to the teams becoming stronger and more competitive.
“Well, I can’t speak much about other teams. But I think if we can be honest about our game, talent doesn’t come cheap,” said the retired midfield maestro.
“If you want talent and quality it doesn’t come cheap, you have to make sure that you break the bank to have your talent, if you want to compete really that’s what you can do.
“So, I think more than anything as football people we know that the teams that compete at the highest level, they make sure that their talents and quality is right.”
Kekana continued: “I know in the league as PSL as tough it is, you need quality to win trophies.”
