Gert Schalkwyk discusses Castillo’s recent dip in form
Former Kaizer Chiefs attacker Gert Schalkwyk has shared his thoughts on Edson Castillo’s recent dip in form following the Venezuelan international’s earlier strong performances in the season.
The Venezuelan joined Chiefs in July last year and made an immediate impact. He scored two goals in the MTN8 and three in the DStv Premiership in the space of three months.
Castillo was also described, by some Chiefs legends, as the best signing for Amakhosi in recent years. But his form in recent games seems to have regressed.
Schalkwyk, however, has praised the 29-year-old, who he says is an intelligent player.
FORMER KAIZER CHIEFS PLAYER CONFIDENT EDSON CASTILLO WILL REGAIN HIS FORM
“For me, Castillo is a very good and intelligent player,” Schalkwyk told FARPost. “If a player can go box to box in modern football, then he is very intelligent. I think he will really regain his form.
“The worst part in South African football is when you don’t score goals, no one really worries. But once you start scoring, even if you had a bad game, if you score a goal, everyone talks about you,” he said.
“But you can see the work rate he is putting in the field of play, it’s very high. Chiefs have quality players; they must just find the right balance. Just to balance it very well because with Ox [Sibongiseni Mthethwa] also there, it’s a very good team.”
GERT SCHALKWYK BACKS AMAKHOSI TO BOUNCE BACK FROM NEDBANK CUP DISAPPOINTMENT
Chiefs will take on Moroka Swallows in a DStv Premiership clash at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 2 March 2024. Schalkwyk has urged the team to put behind the Nedbank Cup setback against Milford FC in the past.
“With Chiefs, you can’t really say they will bounce back, or they will win or whatever. At this moment, I think they will definitely bounce back. It’s not easy to lose to a smaller team like that, even if they play in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
“Everyone starts to mock them, and all those things go to players’ heads. But the next thing you obviously want to do, you want to win back the supporters.”
