Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Siphiwe Mkhonza has passed away

It is a sad day in the South African football fraternity as former Kaizer Chiefs defender Siphiwe Mkhonza has passed away.

The football analyst and former footballer, Mkhonza, sadly passed on in the early hours of Tuesday, 5 March 2024, at his home. 

Mkhonza’s passing was confirmed by his agent, Jazzman Mahlakgane.

‘Dr. Mnandi’, as he was popularly known in football circles, had been suffering from a kidney infection for quite some time. 

The ex-Golden Arrows player was admitted at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg a month ago. He was then released after showing signs of recovery. This was confirmed by Mahlakgane.

At the time of his passing, he was working as a football analyst at the public broadcaster – SABC. The SA footballing community is mourning his loss.

The family will announce the details regarding the funeral arrangements of the former PSL star in due course.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT ABOUT THE PASSING OF SIPHIWE MKHONZA

“The family of the former Golden Arrows and Kaizer Chiefs defender Siphiwe Mkhonza has sadly passed on in the early hours of this morning at home. Mkhonza affectionately known as “Dr Mnandi” from his current employer SABC, has been suffering from a kidney infection for a long time.

“He was admitted at Charlotte Maxeke a month ago. And was released after showing signs of recovery. Mkhonza has been taken care of by his Girlfriend and the mother of his 3 children Ms Nondumiso Masengemi at their home in Roodepoort. The family wishes to thank his former employer. And his colleagues at SABC. Also, fellow football legends from the stable he belonged to, and friends for their support during his illness.

“Mkhonza is survived by his, children, his father Joseph Skheshe Kheshe Mkhonza. His Mom, Phindile Mkhonza, and his brother. The family will communicate further details regarding funeral arrangements.”
