How Keagan Dolly deals with Kaizer Chiefs’ trophy struggles
Kaizer Chiefs senior player Keagan Dolly has opened up about going two seasons without winning a trophy at the club.
Dolly returned to the DStv Premiership in 2021 to join the Soweto giants from French side Montpellier.
Before his move to Europe, the 31-year-old spent two seasons at Mamelodi Sundowns. He won the League, CAF Champions League and a few domestic cups with Masandawana.
But the Bafana Bafana midfielder is now part of a Chiefs side that has struggled to win trophies, including a nine-year trophy drought.
KEAGAN DOLLY ADMITS TROPHY STRUGGLE IS A CONCERN
“It’s difficult. Every day you wake up, you are reminded that you haven’t won anything for a big club like Kaizer Chiefs,” he said.
“I try my best to be the same Keagan, wake up with the same motivation and the same hunger at training. Try to be myself, keep working hard, and be an example for the youngsters that are coming up.
“The likes of [Wandile] Duba and Mfundo Vilakazi, who are training with the first team as well. There are players like Mdu [Mduduzi] Shabalala that I also need to help and inspire. It’s not only difficult for me but for them to see that the club is not doing very well,” added Dolly who is yet to open his goal-scoring account this season.
KAIZER CHIEFS PLAYERS WANT TO END THE CURRENT SEASON ON A HIGH
“It’s difficult for all of us at the club, and we know. We are really trying, obviously, to change things at the club, and for us now, it’s just to try and win the last 10 games that we play and end this season on a high. Go again next season because that’s what we can do.”
Chiefs are set to face their biggest rivals, Orlando Pirates, in the Soweto derby this weekend. Both teams trail log leaders by 13 and 12 points, respectively. But CAF inter-club spots are still a realistic target for the Soweto giants.
