Major update on Thamsanqa Mkhize’s future at Cape Town City

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has issued a major update on the future of the club’s captain Thamsanqa Mkhize whose contract is running out at the end of the season.

The defender arrived at the club in the 2016/17 season, their first campaign in the PSL after they purchased the status of Mpumalanga Black Aces.

He took over the club’s captaincy in 2018 from Robyn Johannes who had joined the now-defunct Bidvest Wits then.

In his time at the Citizens, Mkhize has made more than 230 appearances, rattling in eight goals and turning the provider on 15 occasions.

In 2022, he inked a two-year deal that would come to an end on 30 June this year.

Comitis has confirmed to FARPost that the 35-year-old will be part of the club next season. There is a huge possibility for him to stay on at the club beyond his playing career with non-playing roles to be considered afterwards.

THAMSANQA MKHIZE TO STAY AT CAPE TOWN CITY FOR A GREAT DEAL OF TIME

“He’ll be here until he’s 40,” a Comitis said in a chat with this publication.

“There’s no discussion about whether he’s not gonna be here [next season]. Thami is a team, end of story.

“He’ll be here until 40 and after that he’ll be whatever [non-playing role] he wants.”

The veteran defender is regarded as a vital figure in the dressing room of Cape Town City. He played a huge role when the Western Cape-based side hoisted two MTN8 titles and a Telkom Knockout Cup [now Carling Knockout Cup].

In 2019, he was a big winner at the Cape Town City Awards. He was named both Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season.

City also recently extended the stays of Thabo Nodada, Taahir Goedeman and Darren Keet.
