Junior Khanye reveals Pirates’ advantage over Chiefs in Soweto Derby

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Junior Khanye has revealed Orlando Pirates’ advantage over Amakhosi ahead of the much-anticipated 180th Soweto Derby.

The Soweto giants will battle for three points and bragging rights in the DStv Premiership on Saturday, 9 March. Kickoff at the iconic FNB Stadium is at 15:00.

Heading into the encounter, The Bucs will be aiming to complete a double against their crosstown rivals.

In the reverse fixture played in November 2023, The Sea Robbers walked away with a narrow 1-0 scoreline, as Bafana Bafana striker Evidence Makgopa stole the show by netting the only goal of the match.

JUNIOR KHANYE SAYS ORLANDO PIRATES HAS GOT BETTER QUALITY PLAYERS

The 38-year-old says Pirates have many quality players compared to their rivals. Therefore, these Pirates stars have all it takes to light up the Soweto Derby.

An interesting fact is that in the current campaign, both teams bolstered their squads. The Happy People signed nine players, while The Glamour Boys brought in 10 new faces.

“[Ahead of the derby], in terms of quality, honestly Pirates has got an upper hand in the quality players compared to Kaizer Chiefs,” Khanye told FARPost.

“[Pirates] They got top individual players as compared to Chiefs who have many average players.”

Khanye further tipped academy graduate Relebohile Mofokeng to fill the gap left by Thembinkosi Lorch. Pirates’ fan-favourite completed a move to the Tshwane giants Mamelodi Sundowns in the January transfer window deadline day.

“They [Pirates] recently lost a player who can rise to big occasions in Thembinkosi Lorch after he left [to join Mamelodi Sundowns]. But they got another player who can do that in Relebohile Mofokeng. He has a bright future,” he added.
