Sundowns extend lead at the top of the table

Goals by Teboho Mokoena and Tashreeq Matthews secured Mamelodi Sundowns a 2-0 win against Chippa United at Lucas Moripe on Saturday.

They have now extended their lead at the top of the DStv Premiership log to 45 points. Sundowns are now 12 points above second-placed Orlando Pirates who beat rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto derby earlier in the afternoon.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS BEAT CHIPPA UNITED TO OPEN A 12-POINT GAP

Bafana Bafana international Teboho Mokoena opened the scoring for Masandawana with a stunning shot outside of the 18-area box in the ninth minute. Sundowns dominated play but were nearly caught by Chippa after the lapse of concentration at the back.

Bienvenu Eva Nga was the culprit for failing to capitalise on the opportunities for the visitors. He was left one-on-one against Ronwen Williams in the 17th minute, but his shot was easily saved by Africa’s best goalkeeper.

Eva Nga once again let Sundowns off the hook with two minutes before the half-time break. He was again given a space to net an equaliser but instead opted to pass to a teammate who was already marked by the Sundowns’ defence. The hosts went to the half-time break leading 1-0.

Substitute Tashreeq Matthews sealed it for Sundowns with five minutes remaining scoring a second for the club and also his first since joining the club.
