Why Keagan Dolly is out of the Soweto Derby

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Keagan Dolly is a notable absentee in the Amakhosi line-up as they face Orlando Pirates at the FNB Stadium.

Keagan Dolly started the 1-0 win over Golden Arrows on Tuesday night but is one of the four changes made by interim coach Cavin Johnson.

Johnson also dropped Njabulo Ngcobo, Wandile Duba, who scored the solitary goal against Arrows, and Sibongiseni Mthethwa.

Mduduzi Mdantsane and Reeve Frosler returned to the starting line-up after missing the last couple of games.

Mdantsane last played on 8 November 2023 against Cape Town Spurs. Kaize Chiefs won that match 3-2 and it was the only time they scored more than one goal in a game under the tutelage of Johnson.

Frosler, on the other hand, last started a game on 18 February 2024 against Royal AM. They drew 0-0.

The Amakhosi interim coach has preferred Zitha Kwinika in that position in recent games.
Edson Castillo, who was on the bench, also starts for Amakhosi.

KEAGAN DOLLY’S ABSENCE EXPLAINED

The veteran midfielder fractured his toe and will be out of action for a few weeks. Dolly could be out nursing the toe fracture for about a month.

When asked about the availability of his players ahead of the derby, Johnson refused to disclose to the club’s website.

“Haha, if I told you that I would be giving away half of my team sheet, so I would rather keep that information to myself until the team is announced. You know how Derbies go, it’s best to keep quiet,” he was quoted as saying.

Dolly has missed the most part of the season due to injuries, featuring only in eight games across all competitions. He was out from the beginning of the campaign until October when he returned to action in a match against Cape Town City.

He was also out the whole month of December. And he only came back in February at the start of the second round of the season.
