Edwin Gyimah’s frustration boils over, exits Sekhukhune United

Ghanaian defender Edwin Gyimah’s future at Sekhukhune United hangs in the balance following a reported outburst that stemmed from frustration.

He last played for Sekhukhune on 12 November 2023 when they beat SuperSport United 2-1. The Ghanaian stalwart has not featured again since then.

According to sources, Gyimah’s departure stems from an incident during a meeting to introduce a new signing, Katlego Mohamme, who plays in the same position as him.

The left-footed centre-back joined Babina Noko in January on a loan deal from Mamelodi Sundowns until the end of the season.

Gyimah allegedly used this opportunity to vent his frustrations, expressing a feeling of being undervalued by the club despite his contributions. Reports suggest he directly accused management of failing to appreciate his efforts.

“There’s a tradition here where we welcome new players by giving speeches. During Mohamme’s welcoming, Gyimah had a lot to say about management. Everyone felt that he was using the wrong platform to share his grievances,” a source said.

Sekhukhune United responded by calling Gyimah to engage in a dialogue with him over his grievances. The outcome resulted in a mutual agreement for the club to pay Gyimah his salary until his contract expires at the end of June.

However, Gyimah is no longer training with the team, signifying an immediate end to his playing time at Sekhukhune United. Contacted for comment, Gyimah said it was the club that had to speak on his issue. He insisted he was not authorised to grant interviews to the media.

Mohamme, 25, has already played four times for Babina Noko under coach Lehlohonolo Seema. Two of his appearances were in the DStv Premiership, while the others were in the CAF Confederation Cup. On the other hand, Gyimah, who turned 32 this week, played 11 games for the club this season.

Eight of those were starts, with six coming in the DStv Premiership. In the CAF Confederation Cup, he played twice and in the Carling Knockout Cup, he made two appearances. He also had a dance in the MTN8 Cup.
