Johnson responds to Chiefs fans after missile-throwing in Soweto Derby

Cavin Johnson has sent a message to Kaizer Chiefs fans after they threw missiles following a defeat to Orlando Pirates in the DStv Premiership on Saturday.

Amakhosi lost 3-2 to their arch-rivals in what was a spectacle to behold in front of the sold-out crowd at the FNB Stadium. The Phefeni Glamour Boys threw away the lead twice with the Buccaneers coming from behind to snatch the maximum points.

After the match, missiles were thrown onto the pitch by the Chiefs’ faithful displaying their displeasure at the results.

Asked about his thoughts on the incident, Johnson said he was confused about who the police were protecting, insisting that he didn’t see any stuff thrown onto the field.

However, he says the fans should refrain from doing the same in the future because “it doesn’t work”.

Johnson feels it should be appreciated how the derby transpired, saying he doesn’t recall when was the last time five goals were scored when the two Soweto giants faced off.

“Were they throwing stuff on the field?” asked Johnson. “Hey guys when you lose a game of this magnitude and you just worry about…Did they throw stuff?”

“I didn’t [see]. Maybe I saw one bottle or two but I did see the police. And I don’t who they were protecting me or the players.

“But we wanna say thank you to them [fans] for coming out. Don’t throw stones guys, it doesn’t work.

“In reality, we got to take the game, I think it would have been in the same way if we had three and Pirates had two. Maybe you would have seen stones or so.

“But in saying that I thought they saw a good game of football at the derby. I don’t know when last you saw five goals in the derby.”

“So, those are little things that you guys [media] can write and respect the score-line and write properly about why we received three goals and scored two good goals.

“But I don’t know when last you saw five goals in the derby.”
