Vuyo Mere speaks out on possibility of retirement

Veteran defender Vuyo Mere has spoken out on his future at TS Galaxy and discussed the possibility of retirement from professional football.

Mere is yet to feature for Galaxy in all competitions since the start of the 2023/24 PSL season. The experienced right-back joined the Rockets during the 2021/22 season after parting ways with Moroka Swallows.

The 40-year-old initially signed an 18-month contract with TS Galaxy, which was renewed for a further year at the start of the campaign.

In his spell with Galaxy, Mere has struggled to cement a regular starting berth after playing four matches across all competitions. Club head coach Sead Ramovic has been preferring Marks Munyai or Nkosikhona Radebe in the right wing-back position.

In his career spanning over 20 years, Mere has played for teams such as Mamelodi Sundowns, Bidvest Wits, Platinum Stars, Moroka Swallows, and Galaxy.

Vuyo Mere admits retiring has crossed his mind

“I’m a firm believer in God. He has carried me this far in my career. What I believe in is not worrying about tomorrow,” Mere told FARPost.

“We might plan but God decides, so at the moment I’m still a soccer player, if tomorrow I retire, I’ll leave everything in God’s hands.

“I’m still a soccer player, and I have a contract until the end of the season. So the thought of retiring has come into my mind because everywhere I go, people are asking when I’m retiring.

“But for me, I’ll just take one step at a time. I’ve got a family and a team that support me. It’s nice to be in a family like TS Galaxy. You feel important and you feel wanted. Truly speaking, I can’t say I will retire tomorrow or next week. At the moment, I’m still focusing on my career, and whatever happens tomorrow is in God’s hands.”
