Jomo Sono’s advice that carries Riaan Hanamub

AmaZulu FC defender Riaan Hanamub shared the valuable advice he received from South African football legend and former coach Jomo Sono, which continues to guide him in his career.

The ‘Brave Warriors’ international arrived at Jomo Cosmos in 2018 from Namibian side Orlando Pirates.

He spent two seasons at “Ezenkosi” under the guidance of Sono before his move to Chippa United in 2021. Hanamub has since become an established left-back with talks of interest from Gauteng teams.

The 29-year-old has told FARPost how the words of wisdom from Sono have kept him going.

“I am really grateful because he is the one who took me out of Namibia to bring me to South Africa,” he said.

“So I really respect that Man and I am grateful for him bringing me into South Africa.”

THE ADVICE THAT CARRIES NAMIBIAN INTERNATIONAL DEFENDER RIAAN HANAMUB

“The advice that he gave me when I was still at Chippa, which still carries me up to this day, is to always work hard and remain humble. Hard work pays off if it’s not tomorrow or next week but it definitely will be worth it one day.

“My mindset is such that when I am given a chance, I give my all and to really work hard. That’s what keeps me going as well, so it’s just hard work and determination. It’s a good thing, there is ready talent in Namibia. It’s just about the opportunity you get.”

Hanamub also wants to see his former club back in the PSL. Cosmos has been campaigning in the Gauteng ABC Motsepe League since their relegation in 2022.

“I would love to see Jomo returning to the PSL because he has done so much for South African football. A lot of superstars right now came from Jomo, and I think he should come back.”
