Mushangazhike: ‘He should have stayed put at Pirates’
Ex-Orlando Pirates striker Gilbert Mushangazhike feels one of the most underrated forwards in the PSL should have stayed longer at the Buccaneers for continuity.
Mushangazhike who had a decent spell at Orlando Pirates between 2007 and 2010 opines that staying put was ideal for Terrence Dzvukamanja.
Dzvukamanja made a suprise move to SuperSport United in July 2023, at a time the Soweto giants were banking on him. The Zimbabwean international had developed into Pirates’ main striker under Jose Riveiro.
He struggled in the first half of the 2022/23 campaign. But he rightly struck the right chords after netting eight goals in the second half.
Most importantly, he scored the winner in the Nedbank Cup final, securing Pirates’ place in the CAF Confederations Cup. Therefore his move came as a shock given that Riveiro still had the player in his plans.
GILBERT MUSHANGAZHIKE ON WHY DZVUKAMANJA SHOULD HAVE STAYED AT PIRATES
At SuperSport United, the 29-year-old had a promising start, scoring in his first match against Richards Bay. In addition, he has managed a paltry three goals in 17 appearances.
As such, the former striker Gilbert Mushangazhike feels Dzvukamanja could have been among the top scorers had he remained under Riveiro.
“He should have stayed put at Pirates. I don’t know the circumstances that made him leave. But from how he was performing at that time, I think staying would have given him roon for continuity,” Mushangazhike told FARPost.
“He was starting to get his groove back, scoring crucial goals for the team. And I even saw the coach was confident about him.
“Right now, he hasn’t given as much return as we expected from him. He would have been among the topscorers had he stayed because of continuity
It remains to been seen how Dzvukamanja will fare until the season ends. But his current statistics are undoubtedly a far cry from what is expected from him.
