Pirates through to the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals

Defending Champions Orlando Pirates advanced to the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup after a 4-0 win against Hungry Lions at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

The Buccaneers made four changes from the squad that beat rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto derby last weekend. Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine was given compassionate leave after losing his mother last week Friday.

The hosts put pressure on their Motsepe Foundation Championship opponents from the first minute. They were finally rewarded after Morena Monaheng scored an own goal in the 21st minute.

The hosts went into the half-time break leading 1-0. They continued where they left off in the second half putting more pressure on the Lions defense.

Lions were reduced to 10-men in the 59th minute after Yamkela Gamede was shown a red card for a foul on Patrick Maswanganyi who looked set to double the lead.

Six minutes later, Tshegofatso Mabasa doubled the lead for the Buccaneers with a close range shot. It took only six minutes for Saleng to increase for Pirates and make it 3-0 as the Lions became hopeless. Mabasa scored his second of the match a fourth for Pirates during the referee’s optional time.

UPDATE ON MAKHEHLENE MAKHAULA AFTER INURY SCARE

Pirates midfielder Makhehlene Makhaula caused a scare after what looked like he was struggling to breathe five minutes before the break. The Pirates’ medical team had to quickly react and put him on oxygen.

He was taken to the hospital and replaced by Thalente Mbatha. The latest on Makhaula is that he was feeling major pain on the right side of his stomach. He had also started to communicate with the Pirates medical team a few moments after he was stretched out.

OTHER NEDBANK CUP LAST 16 RESULTS ON SATURDAY

Chippa United beat amateur side FC Ravens 2-1 at Buffalo City Stadium. The Chilli Boys needed extra time to secure a place in the quarter-finals with goals from Andile Mbenyane and Thabo Makhele.

A Shandre Campbell brace and a late strike by Gamphani Lungu saw SuperSport United beat Richards Bay 3-1 at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium. Richards Bay scored a consolation through Sibusiso Mthethwa.
